APPRECIATION OF MING BLUE AND WHITE

Ming non-imperial blue and white paintings are usually executed  in free and non-restrained manner.  Little attention is paid to capture the details.  Rather, the emphasis is to the capture the spirit of the subject with minimum brush strokes.  The chinese called this style "xieyi" painting. Indeed the potters had achieved much success in this aspect.  Many of the paintings found on the blue and white wares are lively and attractive.

The artistic value of non-imperial blue and white paintings can be best studied through wares still exisiting. I have selected a number of pieces from my collection to share with you.  They are broadly classifed into 5 categories and in chronological order (click to view chronology):

Animals
Human Figures
