Bamboo  

 

Bamboo is found in most part of China.  The young shoots is a delicacy and the pulp used to manufacture of paper.  The stem is suitable for making furniture and other utensils. In ancient time, fireworks were made made from bamboo which explodes with loud band.  It was used during new year and other festive occasions to ward off evil spirits.  This was how the term zhu bao pin an (竹报平安)literally meaning bamboo heralding peace, came about.  Nowadays, this meaning was usually conveyed by showing an infant lighting a firecracker.

It is also an emblem of longevity owing to its durability and ability to remain evergreen and flourishes throughout the winter.  Bamboo together with pine tree and plums are the 3 friends of winter which symbolises everlasting friendship and strength in adversity.

The chinese character of bamboo zhu (竹)is a homophone for 'to wish' (祝 ).  Commonly arranged  with other symbols of longevity and happiness to convey auspicious messages.  Such as bamboo with paradise flycatcher to wish someone a long life, bamboo with pine tree,  lingzhi, narcissus and etc for birthday wish of longevity.
