Peach

The peach is a favourite chinese symbol of longevity.  The symbolic link is probably derived from the mythical tale of immortality peaches grew in the garden of Daoist goddess Xi Wangmu (Queen mother of the west).  She gave the peaches to the heavenly guests during her birthday which was held every 6000 years.  Other well-known mythical anecdotes with longevity symbolism include that of the deity Magu and  Dongfangshuo.  But the most well-known deity symbolising longevity must be Shouxing¡¡£¨ÊÙÐÇ£©.  He is usually portrayed carrying a large peach.  Together with¡¡deity Fuxing £¨¸£ÐÇ£© and Luxing £¨Â»ÐÇ£©, they embody the wishes of the chinese since ancient time for happiness, wealth/emolument and longevity.

A favourite design incorporates the peach and bats (symbol of happiness) to convey the wish of happiness and longevity.  A peach encircles by 5 bats conveys the meaning of five blessings:long life, riches, health, love of virtue and natural death. Other rebus with peach includes shou san fu hai (Longevity like the mountain, happiness boundless as the sea) and san duo (three abundances).
