Swastika

¡¡

The swastika is a very ancient symbol.  It is most frequently associated with Buddhism and often seen at the position of the heart of the Buddha.  It is a symbol of the seal of the Buddha's heart and is believed to contain within it the whole mind of Buddha.

In China, the symbol is an ancient form of the character fang £¨·½£©, meaning the four regions of the world.  From about A.D. 700 it acquired the meaning of wan £¨Íò£©,ie 10 thousand, ¡¡symbolising infinity.  This is the meaning that it was frequently used to convey in design of decorative art in China.  Most frequently depicted with shou character (longevity) or bats for blessings to mean infinite longevity and blessings.
