The motif usually depicts two magpies (xi que) chattering, alluding to xi (joyous) xiang feng (encounter). In chinese, xi que can be translated as bird of joy.
The chinese regards the magpie as a bird of good omen. If it builds its nest near the house, it foretells good luck for the residents.
